Toyota has unveiled the facelifted 2024 Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series, surprising the world with its new features. The updated model is set to arrive in Australia in the fourth quarter of this year, boasting a refreshed front-end design with a retro look, improved interior, upgraded multimedia system, enhanced safety features, and a groundbreaking mild-hybrid four-cylinder diesel automatic powertrain.
This marks the first major facelift for the Toyota LandCruiser since 2007. The introduction of the MY23 model, which came with autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and a GVM upgrade, preceded this update, but the demand for the LC70 in Australia has been so high that the order book remains closed. Customers who are already on the waiting list will have to wait until 2024, and they may have to pay a higher price for the MY24 model.
The most significant update for the 2024 Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series is the inclusion of the same engine that will be featured in the top-selling HiLux range in early 2023. This engine delivers 150kW of power at 3400rpm and 500Nm of torque over 1600-2800rpm. Compared to the existing 4.5-litre V8 turbo-diesel engine in the 70 Series (151kW at 3400rpm and 430Nm over 1200-3200rpm), the new four-cylinder diesel offers an additional 70Nm of torque. The downsized 2.8-litre engine will be exclusively paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, and it remains to be seen whether it will be more affordable than the V8.
For the first time since 1991, Toyota will introduce a four-cylinder LandCruiser 70 Series in Australia. Additionally, it will be the first LandCruiser in three decades to offer an automatic transmission. The four-cylinder diesel-auto drivetrain will be available in three Single Cab ute grades (Workmate, GX, and GXL), as well as two grades (Workmate and GXL) for Double Cab, Troop Carrier, and Wagon variants. The V8 Wagon will only be available in the GLX grade.
Accompanying the updated powertrain is a redesigned front-end that pays homage to the iconic LandCruiser 40 Series from the 1960s. The new design features bold circular LED headlights, bringing a modern touch to the classic 70 Series. It also includes a new bonnet, front wheel-arches, bumper, and grille.
Inside the vehicle, Toyota has enhanced the ergonomics and practicality with a redesigned instrument cluster and center console. All models will come standard with a new 6.7-inch infotainment touch-screen that features wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
In terms of safety, the MY24 LandCruiser 70 Series will not only inherit the AEB system from the MY23 model but will also introduce lane departure alert, road sign assist (speed sign recognition only), and automatic high-beam as part of its Toyota Safety Sense driver assistance suite.
Sean Hanley, Toyota Australia Sales, Marketing, and Franchise Operations President, expressed excitement about the upgraded model, stating, "The LandCruiser 70 Series has built up a loyal and passionate fanbase with customers drawn to its rugged styling and legendary off-road performance, and this substantially upgraded model builds upon those strengths. With a new powertrain, including an automatic transmission for the first time, along with significant safety and convenience technology, the LC70 is an ideal vehicle for those working on the land, as a tool of trade, or for recreational users heading off on an outback adventure."
